The ultimate life habit is building your self-worth — Life Coach Australia Insights

I once coached a woman named Stephanie, a successful professional in her late 40s. On paper, she had it all, career achievements, a loving family, and a vibrant social life.

So why did you need life coaching? Why did she reach out for my support?

She confessed to feeling like an imposter, constantly questioning her value. Despite external validations, she struggled with an internal narrative that whispered,

"You're not enough."

“It will never be enough”

The thirst for more was strong and it was crushing her wonderful life

Steph’s story isn't unique. Many individuals, regardless of their external successes, grapple with diminished self-worth. Understanding where self-worth originates, why it's vital, and how to rebuild it is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. Because if you don’t have a handle on this, then life will feel like a cup with a broken base…Something that can never be filled.

Understanding Self-Worth

Self-worth is the intrinsic value we assign to ourselves. It's our internal compass that dictates how we perceive our value, independent of external achievements or opinions. Unlike self-esteem, which often hinges on accomplishments, self-worth is about recognising our inherent value as human beings.

Psychologist Carl Rogers introduced the concept of "conditions of worth," suggesting that individuals often internalise standards set by others, leading them to believe they're only valuable when meeting certain criteria. This external validation can distort our self-perception, making our self-worth contingent on others' approval.

Have you ever experienced this?

The Importance of Self-Worth

A healthy sense of self-worth is foundational for mental well-being, it is a habit we must master for a full life. It influences our relationships, career choices, and overall life satisfaction. When we value ourselves, we're more likely to set boundaries, pursue meaningful goals, and navigate challenges with resilience.

Conversely, low self-worth can lead to:

  • Negative Self-Talk: Persistent internal criticism that undermines confidence.

  • Avoidance of Opportunities: Fear of failure or rejection can prevent individuals from seizing growth opportunities.

  • Unhealthy Relationships: Settling for less than one deserves due to a belief of unworthiness.

  • Mental Health Issues: Increased susceptibility to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.

Factors Impacting Self-Worth

Here’s the truth: self-worth isn’t something you’re born with; it's built over time, shaped by the moments that matter and the stories you choose to hold onto. Sometimes, it’s what happens to you via the world you live in and the relationships you have. Other times, it’s what you believe about those moments.

I’ve seen it time and time again in my work as a life coach.

Someone with a lifetime of success, but one offhand comment from a parent or partner has been quietly eroding their confidence for years.

Or it’s the social media scroll… the subtle comparison to someone else’s highlight reel that leaves you feeling less than. Or it’s the failure you couldn’t shake, the relationship that fell apart, or the job you didn’t get. Those moments that felt like proof you weren’t good enough.

When you start to untangle it all, you realise how these experiences shape the way you see yourself, the choices you make, and the life you end up living.

Let’s break down the biggest culprits that chip away at self-worth

  • Childhood Experiences: Negative feedback, neglect, or trauma during formative years can instill beliefs of unworthiness.

  • Societal Pressures: Constant comparisons, especially in the age of social media, can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

  • Personal Failures: Mistakes or setbacks, if not processed healthily, can diminish self-perception.

  • Toxic Relationships: Being in environments where one is devalued can reinforce negative self-beliefs.

6 Strategies to Rebuild Self-Worth

Here’s the good news: you’re not stuck. Self-worth isn’t fixed; it’s something you rebuild, brick by brick, through the choices you make every single day.

It’s not about reading one book or having one lightbulb moment that changes everything. It’s about learning to back yourself, even when the old stories try to pull you down.

I’ve seen clients rebuild their self-worth by taking small, purposeful actions. Sometimes it’s a hard conversation they’ve been avoiding, other times it’s simply standing in front of the mirror and saying, I’m enough.

So, where do you start? What habits can you focus on?

Here are the practical strategies I share with clients every week, tools that work, when you put them to work…

  1. Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you'd offer a friend. Recognise that everyone has flaws and makes mistakes.

  2. Challenge Negative Beliefs: Identify and confront internal narratives that undermine your value. Replace them with affirming truths.

  3. Set Boundaries: Protect your energy by setting limits in relationships and situations that drain or devalue you.

  4. Celebrate Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.

  5. Engage in Positive Habits: Incorporate routines that promote well-being, such as regular exercise, journaling, or meditation.

  6. Seek Support: Engage with therapists, coaches, or support groups to navigate the journey of rebuilding self-worth.

Conclusion

Rebuilding self-worth isn't about becoming someone new; it's about reconnecting with who you truly are. It's a process of shedding external validations and embracing your inherent value. Remember, your worth isn't determined by others' opinions or past mistakes but by the unwavering truth that you are enough, just as you are.
