The Odyssey Plan starts with a hard truth:
You don’t need more clarity. You need better options.
Most people come to experience life coaching with me, thinking they’re stuck because they don’t know what they want. Frequently that’s not actually the problem.
The real issue?
They’ve only allowed themselves to consider one version of their life.
One career path.
One identity.
One definition of success.
Built from the one story they've repeated in their minds for decades
So of course it feels heavy. Of course it feels confusing & limiting.
You’ve boxed yourself into a single narrative… and now you’re trying to optimise it instead of questioning it.
That’s where the Odyssey Plan changes everything.
“The only way that we can live is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”– C. Joybell C.
The Trap: You’re Overcommitted to One Version of Yourself
Let’s call it out. You’ve built a life that looks good on paper:
Stable career ✔️
Decent income ✔️
Responsibilities handled ✔️
But something’s off. You feel it in what I call the restless gaps:
Sunday nights and other quiet moments
After big wins that don’t feel like much anymore. Moments that feel like the volume and colour of life has been reduced to monochrome and background noise
And instead of addressing it, most people do this:
Set new goals and push harder
Tell themselves to be grateful, possibly start a gratitude journal
Just ignore the feeling altogether
That’s not growth, nor a better life. That’s just simply avoidance.
And I'll tell you something, you probably don’t need to squeeze more out of your current path.
You need to step back and ask a better question: “What if this isn’t the only way my life could look? What if it was on another path towards a different destination”
What Is the Odyssey Plan?
The Odyssey Plan is one of the most practical life design tools for anyone seeking career clarity, direction, or a reset. Instead of guessing your next move, it helps you explore multiple future paths and test them in real life, not just in your head.
It was developed by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, two Stanford professors who applied design thinking principles to life and career planning.
Their work, popularised through Designing Your Life, challenges the idea that there’s a single “right” path. Instead, they argue that a well-designed life is built through experimentation, iteration, and testing different versions of your future, rather than waiting for clarity to appear
Instead of asking: “What should I do next?”
You ask: “What are three completely different lives I could live from here?”
Not slight variations but different lives. Because real clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder about one option. It comes from comparing multiple real possibilities. This is real life experimentation
The Three Paths That Change Everything
1. Your Current Path (If Nothing Changes)
This is your reality… extended.
If you keep doing what you’re doing:
Where are you in 5 years?
What does your work look like?
How do you feel day-to-day?
No fantasy. No optimism bias…Absolutely no BS to yourself! Just the brutal honesty.
Most people avoid this because it forces a confronting truth. Much of their life results have been because of autopilot and habits that have formed over years.
The other confronting truth, they have more agency for change than they want to believe…
If nothing changes… nothing changes.
2. The Alternative Path (If Your Current Life Disappeared)
Now strip it back.
Your current job, industry, or role is gone.
No fallback. No safety net.
If you don’t get cracking and find a different way, you don’t adapt… you fall behind.
What do you do?
This forces you to:
Think beyond your current identity
Reconnect with interests and passions you’ve buried
Consider paths you’ve dismissed as “not realistic”
This is where creativity starts to show up, a once possible vibrant version of you begins to stir and awaken.
We have so much more potential inside of us
3. The Wild Card Path (If Fear and Money Didn’t Matter)
This is the one most people rush past, because they pass it off as wishful and wasteful thinking…daydreaming if you will
Don’t be that person.
If there were no consequences:
What would you try?
What would you build?
Who would you become?
This isn’t about quitting your life tomorrow.
It’s about exposing something deeper:
What you actually want… before you filter it, before you talk(ed) yourself out of wonderful possibilities for the ultimate and best version of you.
The Part Most People Skip (And Why They Stay Stuck)
Here’s where this exercise either changes your life… or becomes another “nice idea”.
Most people, write the plans and feel inspired for a day…Then go straight back to their normal routine
Why, I hear you ask?
Because thinking is safe and action is not.
Action can lead to failure and for most, the thought of failure stings in a way that the hint of success just cannot push past.
The Odyssey Plan only works if you move from:
“That’s interesting…”
to:
“I’m testing this.”
The Truth You Need to Hear
You don’t lack options, you really don’t.
You lack the willingness to:
Challenge your identity
Let go of what’s comfortable
Take action before you feel ready
That’s it.
Harsh, no BS but accurate.
Because there are people with fewer resources, less time, and more pressure… building entirely new lives.
The difference isn’t intelligence.
It’s execution and the courage to challenge the current position to embrace anew via clear habit change.
How to Use the Odyssey Plan Properly (Not Just Intellectually)
Here’s the intentional action for you:
Stop trying to pick the “perfect” path. and start testing one.
Step 1: Choose the path with the most energy
Not the safest. Not the most logical.
The one that actually pulls you forward.
Step 2: Run a small experiment within 7 days
Have one conversation
Start one project
Take one visible step
No overthinking. No planning loops.
Step 3: Track evidence, not feelings
Did this energise you?
Did you show up differently?
Did it create momentum?
Clarity comes from action, not reflection.
Why This Matters More Than You Think
This isn’t about career change.
It’s about ownership of your life.
Because the longer you stay in a life that doesn’t fully align:
The harder it becomes to leave
The more your identity locks in
The easier it is to settle
And settling doesn’t always look like an epic and loud failure.
It looks like:
“This is just how life is”
“I should be grateful”
“Maybe later”
That’s how people drift for years that eventually lasts for decades, then wake up one day and truly realise “my life sucks”
Final Thought: Stop Waiting
You don’t need another podcast or framework.
You don’t need more time to “figure it out”.
You don’t need to wait until the weather changes
You need to make a decision:
Am I going to keep thinking about change… or actually build it?
The Odyssey Plan gives you the structure.
But the outcome? That comes down to whether you’re willing to act.
Ready to Stop Thinking and Start Moving?
If you’re reading this and something has hit… don’t ignore it.
That’s the signal.
I work with individuals who are done sitting in the gap between knowing and doing, because that’s simply time wasting.
If that’s you, book a call.
Let’s cut through the noise and build something that actually moves your life forward.
